Marc vom Ende to become new Master Perfumer at Bell Flavors & Fragrances in Leipzig – where experience meets innovation

Marc vom Ende is to become new Master Perfumer at Bell Flavors & Fragrances in Leipzig – where experience meets innovation. Marc vom Ende is joining Bell Flavors & Fragrances in Leipzig as Master Perfumer and Fragrance Consultant – a move that combines tradition and innovation in fragrance development. Marc vom Ende, an experienced perfumer and trainer, has been part of the Bell Flavors & Fragrances team in Leipzig since August 2026. His expertise combines decades of practical experience with modern, data-driven fragrance development. The Leipzig site, historically significant for the fragrance industry, provides the ideal setting for this.

An experienced perfumer returns to a historic location

Marc vom Ende brings with him extensive experience gained during his time in Berlin, Hamburg, Holzminden, New York and Paris. He has also been involved for many years in the further development of Europe’s leading training programme for fragrance consultants, the ‘Maitre des Parfums’, the ‘first in beauty’ quality association and numerous other industry projects. His work covers a broad spectrum, ranging from fine fragrances to hair and body care products. As head of perfumery schools, he has also paved the way for many talented young international students to enter the field of fragrance development. His move to Leipzig is particularly significant, as he previously sent his trainees specifically to the historic Schimmel Library – a place regarded as the cradle of the modern fragrance industry. His appointment thus brings things full circle, symbolising the connection between tradition and innovation.

“Leipzig and Miltitz have set new standards in the history of our industry. Tapping into this potential anew and developing it further using modern tools is, for me, one of the most exciting tasks I can imagine.”

Leipzig: a location with a significant history in the fragrance industry

Leipzig, and in particular the Miltitz district, is closely linked to the development of the European fragrance industry and the tradition of perfumery. The trading house Schimmel & Co., founded in 1829, was one of the first companies to place perfumery on a scientific footing. In 1879, Schimmel opened the industry’s first industrial research laboratory and worked closely with Otto Wallach, who would later win the Nobel Prize. The resulting findings on the chemistry of terpenes and ‘Schimmel’s Test’ set international quality standards. For decades, the legendary ‘Schimmel Letters’ were regarded as the bible of the fragrance industry: they were published as annual trade reports from 1873 onwards, before becoming standalone company publications from 1877. With the publication of English editions from 1890 and French editions from 1896, the company also made a name for itself internationally. From 1956 to 1986, the reports were then distributed worldwide as the ‘Miltitzer Reports’. Bell took over the facilities in Miltitz in 1993 and continues this tradition of research.

Systematic use of raw material knowledge as a driver of innovation

The focus of Marc vom Ende’s work at Bell is on combining many years of experience with a systematic, data-driven approach to processing raw material knowledge. This will enable Bell’s fragrance experts to access suitable fragrance building blocks more quickly and with greater precision in future. At the same time, the raw materials portfolio is being continuously developed – with a particular focus on functional properties such as odour masking and blooming, i.e. the way fragrances fill a room. The use of artificial intelligence is also being critically assessed to support well-founded and efficient decision-making in fragrance development.

Expert knowledge of historical fragrances as a valuable resource for the industry

Marc vom Ende’s comprehensive knowledge of historical and modern fragrance compositions is highly regarded by industry experts. Elmar Keldenich, Managing Director of the Federal Association of Perfumeries – Cosmetics Trade Association, particularly highlights Marc vom Ende’s in-depth understanding: “His profound knowledge of historical fragrances and their development is a valuable resource for the entire industry.” Keldenich points to the importance of such expertise, which has also played a central role for many years in the training of fragrance sommeliers on the ‘Maître des Parfums’ seminar. There, professionals from the perfumery retail sector learn to analyse and distinguish between fragrances and to communicate them in a customer-focused manner – skills that are sustainably strengthened by the knowledge of experienced perfumers such as Marc vom Ende. This combination of tradition and modern fragrance expertise not only enhances product quality but also boosts advisory skills within the perfume retail sector and facilitates the transfer of knowledge from the retail sector into fragrance development.

Impetus for the future of fragrance development

In Marc vom Ende, Bell is gaining an expert who combines experience, scientific rigour and comprehensive training expertise across many levels. This is likely to significantly strengthen Bell’s position as an innovative creation and development partner for the perfumery and cosmetics industry. For companies in the sector, this development offers new impetus for the future of fragrance development – with a clear link to tradition and modern technology.
