Lauder, the esteemed Chairman Emeritus of the company, who died on June 14, 2025, at the age of 92. He left this world surrounded by his loving family, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has profoundly influenced the cosmetics industry and beyond.
Born in 1933 in New York City, Leonard was the eldest son of Estée Lauder and Joseph H. Lauder, the visionary founders of a company that has become synonymous with prestige beauty. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and a former lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Lauder joined The Estée Lauder Companies in 1958 and played an instrumental role in its transformation into a global leader in beauty.
Throughout his illustrious career, Leonard Lauder was a beacon of innovation and philanthropy. He served as President from 1972 to 1995 and as CEO from 1982 to 1999, overseeing a period marked by remarkable growth and the launch of iconic brands such as Clinique and Aramis. His commitment to creativity and excellence helped shape marketing strategies that revolutionized the industry.
Beyond his corporate achievements, Mr. Lauder was renowned for his philanthropic spirit. He was a steadfast advocate for art and education, pledging extensive donations to institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His passion for health research led him to co-found organizations tackling Alzheimer’s and breast cancer, reflecting his deep compassion and commitment to improving lives.
Leonard Lauder’s impact extended beyond business and philanthropy; he was a mentor to many, believing in the potential of individuals and the power of kindness. His warmth and generosity left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to encounter him, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
Survived by his wife Judy and his two sons William and Gary, Leonard A. Lauder’s extraordinary life will be celebrated and remembered by his family, colleagues, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation.
“Leonard A. Lauder will be remembered as one of the great figures of the cosmetics industry – a man whose values and legacy will continue to be felt for years to come. The industry and society have lost a great supporter and innovator.” emphasises Reinhard D. Wolf, companion and Honorary President of the German Perfumery Association (Bundesverband Parfümerien) and the European Perfumery Association (FEPD).
