Strellson N°1 wins iF packaging award

The Swiss fashion and lifestyle brand Strellson has won the prestigious international iF packaging award 2011 for Strellson N°1, the brand’s first fragrance for men. The minimalist concept, the resource-friendly use of material and the very clear, purist flacon design won over the jury of experts. The perfume specialist MÄURER & WIRTZ, the label’s license partner, is very proud of this new award for the men’s fragrance, which also won the red dot Design Award in 2010. The flacon was designed by the Hamburg-based star designer Peter Schmidt.

Strellson N°1 is one of the 59 submissions which have been honoured with an iF packaging award 2011. In January 2011, packaging experts evaluated the 203 submissions from 114 participants in 24 countries. The winners will be presented with their award at a ceremony which ties in with the international trade show interpack, starting on 12 May 2011 in Düsseldorf; the winning designs will also be featured in a special exhibition.

“Packaging doesn’t have to be a waste of resources and materials. Pure reduction does not always yield a great result, but it is obvious that efforts are being made to reduce the amount of packaging and its environmental impact. Often, the winning products are so effective simply because they are based on a minimalist idea. They are exceptionally good, and very simply and clearly designed”, stated the jury of the iF packaging award 2011.

Strellson No. 1 won the internationally coveted iF packaging award in the category sales packaging.

Alongside the overall aspect of design quality, criteria such as finish, choice of materials, degree of innovation, environmental impact, functionality, ergonomics, visualisation of intended use, safety and brand value/branding all played a key role in the jury’s decision.

Strellson N°1 is sensual minimalism in its purest form, reflecting the strong affinity that Strellson men have with clear design, striking materials and innovative technology. These are all characteristics that the Peter Schmidt design studio in Hamburg is synonymous with. Although the shape of the flacon is clear and stringent, the design dares to use a novel combination of materials and technology. One strikingly innovative feature is the fact that the bottle is encased in a soft rubber coating. Technical details, such as the heavy, metallic cap with a magnetic closure that closes with a distinct pull and a clearly audible click, round off the masculine, yet classically modern look. The combination of black and silver creates a reduced and stylish look which perfectly sums up the brand values. The clear design language of Strellson N°1 is also reflected in the visual communications: the minimalist aesthetic and pared-down monochrome visuals are used to great effect in the adverts.

Interpack visitors will be able to see the winning products of the iF packaging award 2011 in a special show on the exhibition centre grounds in Düsseldorf. The iF packaging award yearbook 2011 will be published as a joint book with the iF communication design award 2011 on 12 May 2011, which is also the day of the award ceremony. All winning submissions can be found in the iF online exhibition at the iF website at www.ifdesign.de
